The greatest threat to freedom in a democracy is propaganda and disinformation. Fox “news” has been brainwashing viewers/voters for more than 20 years. And they finally succeeded, with an assist from Putin, to install a liar, con man, and deplorable human being in the presidency. Those who were duped can be forgiven. Those who still believe, who refuse to accept that they’ve been conned and brainwashed, please wake up. History and your god will not judge you well. Redemption is easy and kind. A reckoning will hurt. Jesus said the meek shall inherit the earth—not the morons, liars, con artists, blowhards, and braggarts. And especially not anyone professing to be a “stable genius.”
While I don’t always like their “mocking” tone of religious believers in some of their ads, I do agree and support the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s overall purpose of promoting the constitutional principle of separation of state and church. And I loved this full-page ad in today’s New York Times, especially the fine print in the bottom right (see enlargement below). And the fact that you can donate to them in Mike Pence’s name is priceless.
Let’s zoom in on the fine print:
From a New York Times Op-Ed:
Fox “News” v. Robert Mueller
[quotes added because even the Times needs a proofreader]
If only we could dismiss Sean Hannity, Jeanine Pirro, Laura Ingraham and the other well-paid propagandists at Fox News as though they were harmless drunks at the end of the bar, ticking off their conspiracy theories to anyone who will listen. Unfortunately, the guy sitting on the next stool is the president of the United States, and he’s all ears.
And it’s not just the president. It’s all the sheep who have been brainwashed by the Hannity, Pirro, Ingraham, Bannon, Limbaugh cabal. These assholes are not patriots. Their sole mission, with the aid of foreign adversaries, is to destroy America. They are evil malignancies that spread fake news and conspiracy theories. They must be shunned and removed. The alt-reality, fact-free, lying, sly-as-a-fox propaganda machine is the greatest threat facing the United States.
By the way, there is no war on Christmas. There never has been. But there is a war on America. And Fox is leading the charge.
(I didn’t create this meme. A friend sent it to me. Not sure where it originated. Merry Christmas!)
If this makes you mad as hell…
but this doesn’t…
Your brain might be fox-washed. Seek treatment immediately.
Time will show that we were *all* the fools—and whatever temporary satisfaction the Right got from annoying the Left wasn’t worth America.
1. We need to never again discuss this man with respect to policy—it’s become more than clear in nine months that he holds no policy positions.
2. So if you support Donald Trump because of any view you claim he holds, I don’t ever want to hear about it. The man holds no views.
3. There is no position Donald Trump has ever taken that he has not, at some point in the past or present, taken the opposite position to.
The alt left is a made up term by right wing propagandists like Sean Shamity, now picked up by the president, to create a false equivalency to white supremacists, fascists, nazis, racists, anti-semites, and bigots of all stripes. When they use the term alt left, they mean feminists, blacks, non-whites, anti-fascists, gays, interfaith clergy members peacefully singing while they incite violence with torches, or anyone who dares to speak out against discrimination, hatred, and fascism. Since I won’t be silent, I guess that makes me a part of the alt left. Continue reading “Alt Left”
Yesterday at the gym, I had to school a young man in proper etiquette. That leaving your gym bag next to a machine doesn’t entitle you to hold the machine until you are ready to use it.
The machine had been empty long enough for me to do three sets of fifteen reps on another machine nearby. Then I moved to the “bagged” machine and started adjusting the seat and weights. Appearing out of nowhere, the young man stepped into the my space and said he was using the machine. No excuse or pardon me. Just there. In my space.
I was momentarily stunned and gave him my best “are you kidding me” look. He didn’t flinch or move. “Really?” I said.
“Yes,” he said, “I left my gym bag here. Didn’t you see it? I was using it.”
We had a five second standoff. Then I walked away. In those five seconds, and the thirty that followed, I kept telling myself, “Let it go. Let it go. Who cares? It’s only a weight machine. Go work out a different muscle. Don’t make a scene.” And finally, “Look around, you’re out numbered.” I was one of only three women in the entire gym, and the other two were nowhere near me. Most Sunday mornings we tune into CBS Sunday Morning, and watch right up to the sights and sounds of nature at the very end. Then we turn it off before the talking heads and pundits pontificate on Face The Nation (and the other Sunday round table shows).
This morning, right before they left us with that tranquil end to the show, they showed a promo for Face The Nation. When John Dickerson said, coming up, it’s make or break time for the Republican healthcare bill, I turned to my husband and ranted, “What does that mean? Make or break time? Mitch McConnell owns the Senate. He can make or break anything any time he wants. If he wants to have a vote on the healthcare bill next week, he can. If he wants to have a vote a year from now, he can. He controls the Senate. This is a guy who stole a Supreme Court seat. He can do whatever the fuck he wants whenever the fuck he wants to.”
And in response to my short, but intense outburst, my loving husband calmly said, “You had to get that out. Now, what do you want to eat for dinner this week?”
And with that, we set off to Trader Joe’s.
But… Media: stop with this make or break time narrative. It’s meaningless. There are no norms left in DC.
That’s my post for today. I’ll leave you with an image from Rocky Mountain National Park.
Anyone who knows me or reads this blog knows I’m not a big fan of the television news media. And by news, I mean legit news organizations, not the sly-as-a-fox-make-shit-up-to-brainwash-our-viewers-in-order-to-serve-our-oligarchic-agenda “news.”
CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, BBC, etc., are all legit news. I may not like the way they present the news, um, I mean BREAK the news, since it’s always BREAKING NEWS with fancy graphics, ominous scoring, and dramatic language—for Pete’s sake, I’m watching the news, not a James Cameron movie—but they are legitimate.
Legit news organizations are NOT fake news. They don’t make shit up. Yes, they make mistakes, as we all do, but they are responsible and correct themselves, or even fire people. We all know Fox never makes mistakes. They are infallible news popes. (That’s sarcasm for those who don’t get sarcasm.) Continue reading “Freedom and Fake News”
When did fighting back against bullies, having no tolerance for intolerance, and accurately calling out the deranged, disgusting, and delusional become the new racism? When did speaking the truth and presenting the facts become hate speech? When did verifiable facts become a liberal bias? How did the smart and educated become the enemy?*
But we are now living in Orwell’s 1984.
The lines between radical and normal, rational and delusional, truth and propaganda, fact and fiction, and ethical and immoral are intentionally being blurred. And by the leader of the free world. If he and his lying minions keep at it, and the cult of deplorables—the hard core 30% who still worship Trump like a messiah—do not wake up, there will not be a free world left for him or anyone to lead.
*My guess is this has always been the case for a segment of the population. But especially when sly-as-a-Fox “news” started and whipped their viewers into a frenzy with fake outrage and weaponized rhetoric.
Some strong points in this Raw Story article—Fundamentalism, racism, fear and propaganda: An insider explains why rural, Christian white America will never change.
A few quotes (well, almost the whole article):
As the aftermath of the election of Donald Trump is still being sorted out, a common theme keeps cropping up from all sides: “Democrats failed to understand white, working-class, fly-over America.” Trump supporters are saying this. Progressive pundits are saying this. Talking heads across all forms of the media are saying this. Even some Democratic leaders are saying this. It doesn’t matter how many people say it, it is complete bullshit. It is an intellectual/linguistic sleight of hand meant to throw attention away from the real problem. The real problem isn’t east coast elites who don’t understand or care about rural America. The real problem is rural America doesn’t understand the causes of their own situations and fears and they have shown no interest in finding out. They don’t want to know why they feel the way they do or why they are struggling because they don’t want to admit it is in large part because of choices they’ve made and horrible things they’ve allowed themselves to believe.
Before the phone rings and my parents cackle-sing “Happy Birthday” into my ear then ask me what kind of cake or pastry I want for my birthday dessert, I wish to address our dear leader and make some birthday wishes of my own.
It is an honor and privilege to turn another year older under your noble reign. May you transfer so much wealth from the poor to the rich that Putin needs to build more Russian banks to hold all the money. May the sick without healthcare not die on the sidewalks in front of your towers. May Mar-a-Lago always rise above sea level. May you detain and deport many Mexican rapists. May facts remain as elusive as your tax returns. May you find the 3 million people who voted illegally. May your faithful followers, especially the Sean Calamity Shamity asslickers, forever defend your cons, lies, vulgarity, indecency, bullying, and cruelty while whining about how victimized they are by liberals. May they always believe fake news and never wake up to the truth. May your every tee shot be a hole-in-one.
And most of all, when your time comes, may God show you more mercy and grace than you did for his children.
The phone’s ringing.
So, dear leader, as you blow out the candles on the planet, let us eat cannoli cake.
Guns suck. People suck worse.
There something mentally unstable with people who worship guns. But okay, I suppose everyone’s got a fetish. If guns are your thing, have it at. But don’t act surprised when someone uses your fetish to murder innocent people.
To be clear: the madman who took aim at Republicans on a baseball field was pure evil. Plain and simple. And if he hadn’t been killed, he deserved to die. (I’m not a knee-jerk bleeding heart against the death penalty. That said, any potential death penalty case should be clear cut with irrefutable, iron-clad evidence, such as with this madman in Alexandria. Innocent people have been put to death. See, contrary to radical right-wing popular belief, liberals are not monolithic. Link provided so you can look it up.)
Neither guns nor evil are going to disappear. But after what happened in Alexandria, instead of addressing the proliferation of guns and evil, our elected officials and the media are telling us to watch our tone. That both sides must be more mindful and careful about how we disagree.
This is absolute false equivalency bullshit! Continue reading “Tone Deaf”
Dear conservative friends and family,
I am not your enemy. And you are not my enemy. But you’d never know that from the information you receive. I have tuned into Fox. I have read Breitbart. The overwhelming message they send is that I, your friend and loved one, should be despised, ridiculed, and, yes, some even say eradicated.
Think about that.
No, really, think about it.
Turn off the TV or radio and get quiet with that thought.
Is your happiness really dependent upon my demise?
Somewhere in your heart I hope you know their sole objective is to divide us. To make you and I seem so irreconcilably different that we hate each other. But the truth is, we are more alike than we are different. Everything I value—things like respecting my fellow human, living an honest life with integrity, being a responsible citizen, caring for my family and friends, and most of all, adhering to the golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated—is completely compatible with everything you value and hold true.
These are (apolitical) conservative values. And I believe we share them. I hope we do.
We are one tribe. But you’d never know that from listening to the false prophets trying to convince you to hate me.
Your liberal friend
My prediction: James Comey’s testimony will mean NOTHING. Actually, less than nothing.
Less than nothing to the Republican Congress and nothing to every one of Trump’s supporters.
Looking for some sort of salvation through stultifying and stilted testimony (with big words that Trump and his followers can’t even understand) in front of Congress (which, by the way, is controlled by the Republicans) is like sending out Donny Osmond to win “Rapper of the Year.”
I confess my “make a wish” moment is to have a spelling bee somewhere in middle America and make the winning word “emoluments.” Continue reading “Get Dirty”
